Unproven “Advanced Recycling” Facilities Have Received Millions in Public Subsidies

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 16:12:13 GMT

When oil and gas companies first launched their campaign to promote recycling to the American public, they pitched the process as a viable and sustainable solution to the plastic pollution problem. More than three decades later, however, the vast majority of plastic waste still ends up incinerated or dumped, less than one-tenth is recycled, and microplastics have been found virtually everywhere on Earth, including the human bloodstream. The petrochemical industry is now pivoting to another solution: “advanced” recycling. The term, also known as chemical recycling, is used to describe a variety of approaches that can supposedly turn even the most hard-to-recycle plastics into “sustainable” fuels or oils and chemicals that can be used in new plastic production. But a new, 159-page report, released today by Beyond Plastics and the International Pollutants Elimination Network, or IPEN, casts serious doubt on the technology’s ability to make even a modest dent on the world’s growing plasti...

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops battled Hamas militants and attacked underground compounds in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday, and a flurry of airstrikes on a refugee camp near Gaza City leveled apartments, leaving craters where buildings once stood. Buoyed by the first successful rescue of a captive held by Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls for a cease-fire and again vowed to crush Hamas’ ability to govern Gaza or threaten Israel following its bloody Oct. 7 rampage, which ignited the war. Several hundred thousand Palestinians remain in the northern part of Gaza, where Israeli troops and tanks reportedly have advanced on several sides of Gaza City, the sprawling urban center. In the Jabaliya refugee camp on Gaza City’s outskirts, at least six airstrikes Tuesday leveled a number of apartment blocks in a residential area, the Hamas-run Interior Ministry said. (NEXSTAR) — Does it feel like there are more people in your city than a few years ago? Depending on where you live, that might actually be the case — 265,000 people did move into Colorado last year. SmartAsset, a financial tech company, has released a list of the fastest-growing cities with populations over 100,000 in the United States. That growth was based on the population difference reported by the U.S. Census between 2017 and 2022 for the 344 largest cities.Southwestern cities, many of them desert suburbs, dominated the top of the list, SmartAsset found.Nationally, it was Buckeye, Arizona, that has seen the largest growth since 2017. Located roughly 35 miles west of the heart of Phoenix, Buckeye's population grew by roughly 48%, going from about 68,000 to 105,500 in 2022.Enterprise, Nevada grew by 46% and Goodyear, Arizona surged by 27%, rounding out the top three.
