Ask Amy: An aunt nervously greets her niece

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:24:21 GMT

Dear Readers: Like you, I’m often curious about what happens to the advice I offer once it leaves my desk, and so I’ve asked readers to send in “updates” to let all of us know how my advice was received, if it was followed, and how things turned out.The responses have flowed in, and I’m interested and often gratified to learn what impact this experience has had on readers. This year I celebrate my 20th year of writing this column. Publishing these updates reminds me that we have been through a lot over these past decades. Some of these updates read like postcards from old friends, and I’m happy to share them.(It’s important to understand that most of these updates offer a positive outcome. I assume this is because when things go well, people are more willing to share their experience.)To refresh all of our memories, I’m running the original Q&A, followed by the update.Dear Amy: I am one of six adult siblings. We gather once or twice a year in a low-key kind of way to stay connect...

Europe to accelerate arms shipments to Ukraine, EU industry chief declares

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:24:21 GMT

The European Union is speeding up arms deliveries to Ukraine in support of the country's counter offensive against Russian forces, EU industry chief Thierry Breton (pictured) said on Sunday (18 June) in an interview with the French daily Le Parisien."We are going to step up our efforts to deliver arms and ammunition-- this is a war of high intensity in which they play a crucial role," Breton said, citing a pledge to supply a million high-calibre weapons over the next 12 months."We are preparing for the war to last several more months, or even longer," he added.Ukraine launched a counteroffensive earlier this month to retake territory from Russian forces, and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin last Thursday (15 June) urged Kyiv's allies to "dig deep" to provide more arms and ammunition.

Former Trump attorney John Eastman’s law license trial raises big questions

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:24:21 GMT

John Eastman sat between his lawyers — a laptop open before him, a pen and pad within easy reach — as the California State Bar put him on trial early Tuesday, June 20, for alleged “dishonesty and moral turpitude.”Eastman, former dean of Chapman University’s law school and alleged architect of Donald Trump’s attempts to reverse his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden, wore a dark suit, occasionally peering over his glasses at the judge who’ll decide if he loses his law license.Did Eastman knowingly make false statements about election fraud leading up to the Jan. 6 insurrection? Did he intentionally file “frivolous” lawsuits misstating facts in courts? Will he lose his law license?Answers aren’t expected until Eastman’s disciplinary trial concludes on June 30. But the widely-watched legal event — a prelude of sorts to what might loom for Trump, Eastman and others if they ever wind up in criminal courts — kicked off Tuesday before California State Bar Court Judge Yvette Roland, with Eastm...

More than 300 people, including parents, supporters of LGBTQ+ groups, and those who oppose them gathered outside Glendale Unified School District headquarters on Tuesday, June 20, as protests intensified over the issue of teaching children about same-sex parents and queer issues, both locally and nationwide. On June 6, the school board voted in favor of celebrating Pride month, prompting a crowd of several hundred people to gather outside, who loudly voiced both support and opposition for the proposition.“I came to voice how I feel about this issue, and also how my son feels about it,” said a Glendale Unified mom on Tuesday, who did not want her or her child named out of fear of retaliation. She said that she and her son “agreed that the more information children have, the more empowered they can be, and in his words, be a better friend.”But longtime Glendale resident Dede Vena, who does not have children in school in the district, said, “The school district is shoving their ideology...

The form of scoring can affect bidding decisions. At IMPs, for example, you want to be plus — plus anything — in partscore deals. At matchpoint duplicate, your goal is to outscore the other pairs who hold your cards — by any margin. In the Platinum Pairs at the Spring NABC, East opened a weak two diamonds, an odd action with that suit. After two passes, North doubled, an answer to South’s prayers. After two passes, West questionably ran to two hearts. North doubled again.PENALTYSouth was sure his side could make 3NT for plus 600 or more. At IMPs, he would have passed; he could expect a sizable plus on defense. If he was plus 500, he might lose a little; but the penalty might be bigger, and if 3NT happened to fail or wasn’t bid in the replay, he would gain heavily. But at matchpoints, South had to consider bidding: If he was plus only 500 on defense, he might get a “bottom.” The winning action was … to pass. Two hearts (or two diamonds) d...
