SAN DIEGO - A local organization is fighting back against a housing plan passed by the San Diego City Council last month. That ordinance would add more housing within a mile of transit stations. “It spreads density around, it’s not a responsible approach to urban planning," said Tom Mullaney with Livable San Diego, who is spearheading the newly filed lawsuit against the City of San Diego. He claims the city is pursuing high density housing without proper planning. “When I say it's adding density everywhere, it’s really adding density everywhere," Mullaney shared. The challenge comes after council's five to four vote of an ordinance back in February of "Sustainable Development Areas," otherwise known as "SDA's." It allows for multi-unit construction up to one mile from transits, instead of half a mile. Mullaney worries the move could have adverse consequences.“This is going to result in fewer people using mass transit because the developers would build farther away. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday conducted its first intercontinental ballistic missile launch in a month, possibly testing a new type of more mobile, harder-to-detect weapons system, its neighbors said, in an extension of the North’s provocative run of missile tests. The launch prompted Japan to issue an evacuation order on a northern island, and though it was later retracted, it shows the vigilance of North Korea’s neighbors over its evolving missile threats.South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staffs said the missile launched on a high angle from near the North Korean capital of Pyongyang fell in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan following a 1,000 kilometer (620 miles) flight. The Joint Chiefs of Staff described the missile as having a medium or longer range. The U.S. National Security Council called it a long-range missile and Japan’s defense minister an ICBM-class weapon. CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A severe tropical cyclone lashed the northwest Australian coast with strengthening winds and increasing rain Thursday as authorities warned the population to prepare for destructive gusts of up to 275 kph (170 mph). Cyclones are common along the sparsely populated Pilbara coast and fatalities are rare, but authorities fear that Ilsa’s extraordinary wind speeds could take some in its path by surprise.Cyclone Ilsa reached Category 4 intensity Thursday over the Indian Ocean and is expected to be the first storm on that scale to cross the Pilbara coast of Western Australia state in a decade, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said.Category 4 cyclones have maximum mean wind speeds of 160-199 kph (99-124 mph) with wind gusts of 225-279 kph (140-173 mph). The results of the April 4 municipal election aren’t certified yet, but the runoff race for the Denver mayor’s office between Kelly Brough and Mike Johnston marched forward Wednesday with a forum where the two candidates agreed with each other plenty but also sought to create some separation.Brough and Johnston met on the University of Denver campus for the event, which was hosted by the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Denver Partnership and the city’s visitors and tourism bureau, Visit Denver.None of the 16 people who ran for Denver mayor earned more than 50% of the vote in the first round of voting. That triggered an instant runoff between the top two vote-getters, Johnston with 24.4% and Brough with 20%, according to unofficial results. The two are seeking to persuade most of the city’s electorate to vote for them in a race that will conclude June 6 and name the city’s first new mayor in more than a decade.Brough appeared to be comfortable...Crews rescue seriously injured paraglider in Riverside County

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants did not literally fall apart Wednesday, though with injuries to Michael Conforto and Bryce Johnson it might have felt like it, but things started to metaphorically crumble in the sixth inning of their rubber match against the Dodgers.A tied game when Taylor Rogers took over at the start of the sixth, the inning began with four straight free passes, including one on a pitch-clock violation and another on the losing end of a 15-pitch battle, and ended with the Giants in a five-run hole after a big shot by — who else? — Max Muncy, the Giant killer who homered two more times and has done so against San Francisco more times than any other player in the majors since 2018.The Giants lost, 10-5. They dropped two of three to the Dodgers, who won’t visit Oracle Park again until the last home stand of the season. By then, who knows if the Giants will still be in contention, but they have to hope, at least, that it won’t be as dreadful as their first set o...Amador Valley baseball: From six wins last year to serious contenders

DUBLIN — They’ve been two of the Bay Area’s hottest and most surprising baseball teams this spring, with three losses between them entering their game Wednesday.Dublin was coming off a win on Tuesday over reigning North Coast Section Division I champion De La Salle, which had beaten the Gaels five consecutive times dating to 2017.Amador Valley had risen to No. 2 in the latest Bay Area News Group rankings, a stunning turnaround given that the Pleasanton school won just six games last year.Adding to the pregame storyline was Amador Valley pitcher Oliver de la Torre, a Cal-bound senior who missed last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. His presence this season is a big reason Amador Valley has doubled its 2022 win total after just 13 games, the 12th win coming Wednesday as de la Torre pitched six strong innings in a 7-1 victory on the road over sixth-ranked Dublin in East Bay Athletic League play.Amador Valley gave its pitcher all the runs he’d need in the thir...Prep baseball: No. 1 Valley Christian rallies late to overtake Bellarmine

SAN JOSE — Bellarmine scored two runs in the top of the first inning and almost made them stand up. But Valley Christian, the No. 1 ranked team in the Bay Area News Group’s Top 20, scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 5-2 victory WednesdayThe Warriors trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth. Bellarmine starter Wade Mountz got the first out before walking Brock Kettelsen on a 3-2 pitch and giving up a single to center by Jordan Ortiz. Bellarmine coach Nate Sutton went to his bullpen then, bringing in Paul Montgomery with a 1-0 count on Jacob Hudson.Montgomery and Mountz are Bellarmine’s two top pitchers. Montgomery comes in from the side with a motion that can be problematic for right-handed batters. But Hudson, the 2022 West Catholic Athletic League MVP, doubled to right-center, bringing in both runners and giving his team a 3-2 lead.“We were expecting to see him earlier in the week so we were practicing against that sinker a little bit,”...Latest news
